Trinity Church is an Evangelical Church located in Chicago.Ā Since the term Evangelical can mean different things to different people, we thought it would be helpful to also provide a brief summary of what this means to our church.
How Trinity Defines “Evangelical”
Our definition is theological (rather than social/political), and the following three points summarize our Evangelical beliefs:
1. We Believe in Salvation Through Christ Alone
We believe that salvation comes by grace alone by choosing to put one’s faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-10). There is no way to “earn” your own salvation and there are no other paths to salvation outside of Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).
2. We Believe the Bible is “Inerrant”
We believe that the sixty-six books of the Bible are the inspired Word of God, which is never wrong nor incorrect. The Word of God, and therefore the Bible, is the final authority for all we believe and how we are to live (2 Timothy 3:16).
3. We Believe We’re Called to Evangelism (The Great Commission)
We believe that God has called the church as a whole, including our church, to share the gospel with everyone (Matthew 28:18-20).
Other Definitions of Evangelical (for Reference)
You’ve probably heard the term Evangelical used in a variety of different contexts. For example, you might have read about the “Evangelical Church” in history books. Or, you might have heard about “Evangelicals” in news reports, where it’s used as a term to describe social demographics and political affiliations.
Although, in some cases, there may be overlap between our church and those other definitions of “Evangelical”, that isn’t necessarily the case. And we felt it was important to make this distinction so that you’ll know that our definition of Evangelical is summarized in the 3 points above.
