Trinity Chicago: A Theologically Conservative Church

When we hear ‘conservative,’ we may think ‘politically conservative’, but for churches, it signals a devotion to Scripture and historic Christian doctrine. With this in mind, Trinity is unapologetically a theologically conservative church in Chicago.

‘Conservative’ and ‘liberal’ are used in many non-political contexts. There is ‘environmental conservation’, low-risk ‘conservative investments’, and initiatives to ‘conserve water’. Likewise there are ‘Liberal Arts’, ‘liberal estimates’, and ‘liberal return policies’.

The heart to ‘conserve’ Scripture is to return to its true meaning. On the other hand, to be ‘theologically liberal’ is to expand or transform doctrines beyond their original meaning. At Trinity, we want to be faithful to God’s Words, and reject man’s misguided interpretations.

BIBLICAL AUTHORITY

As a theologically conservative church, Trinity emphasizes fidelity to the Bible as the ultimate authority for faith and practice. This commitment means every sermon, ministry, and decision is grounded in the divine inspiration and authority of the Bible.

Only the highest authority can verify its own authority; if anything else could, it would then become the highest authority. God is the source of all life and truth; He is the highest authority. The Bible is the greatest book, from the greatest author. The Bible therefore has self-attesting authority. The Apostle Paul said “All Scripture is breathed out by God…” (2 Timothy 3:16). It came through human hands, but it was from the Creator.

Faithful Christians throughout history are united in believing the 66 books of the Bible comprise the final revelation concerning God’s Son. We find clear testimony throughout Scripture affirming messianic promises fulfilled by Jesus.

Even though it is ultimately a matter of faith, we still have great reasons to be confident in God’s book. The manuscripts descend from trusted people, and they were freely received by believers. These documents are consistent in doctrine, and were recognized by succeeding Christians. We stand on a firm historic foundation.

In 1978, The International Council on Biblical Inerrancy (ICBI) — a group of about 300 evangelical scholars and pastors, assembled in Chicago to write The Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy. A key part says…

We affirm that Scripture in its entirety is inerrant, being free from all falsehood, fraud, or deceit. (Article XII)

Unlike trends that shift with societal pressures, Trinity holds to the timelessness of God’s Word. For those searching for a church in Chicago that prioritizes biblical fidelity, Trinity offers a community dedicated to living out God’s Word authentically.

DOCTRINAL CONTRAST

View of Scripture:

Theologically Liberal: The Bible is seen as an important human document, with lots of room for reinterpretation. It can be viewed as “inspirational”, but not directly “inspired”.

Theologically Conservative: The 66 books of the Bible are the inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God, serving as the standard for our faith.

Interpretation of Doctrine:

Theologically Liberal: Adapts doctrines to align with modern values. Focuses on social justice or inclusivity above orthodox teachings.

Theologically Conservative: Emphasizes core doctrines despite modern influences, adhering to historic understandings. Desires to hold truth with love.

Approach to Morality:

Theologically Liberal: Morality is shaped by personal experience or consensus over biblical directives, leading to flexible ethics.

Theologically Conservative: Moral standards are derived from Scripture. God’s moral commands are timeless and unchanging.

Salvation and Jesus:

Theologically Liberal: Salvation may be viewed broadly, sometimes emphasizing universal love over exclusive faith in Christ.

Theologically Conservative: Salvation is through faith alone in Jesus Christ, who is the divine Son of God and the only way to everlasting life.

Role of Tradition:

Theologically Liberal: Prioritizes innovation over tradition, reinterpreting or discarding creeds to reflect modern sensibilities.

Theologically Conservative: Values traditions and creeds as important influences that mark a continuity from the Bible to today.

CHRIST-CENTERED TEACHING AND WORSHIP

As a theologically conservative church in Chicago, Trinity’s teaching and worship are centered on Jesus. He is fully God and fully man. He was crucified and is risen. He will judge the living and the dead. He calls out our brokenness, but offers to redeem us.

Our preaching aims to make the unadulterated grace of Jesus clear to all. We call people to repentance, to put their faith in God, and to obey His teaching. Our worship reflects a balance of reverence and joy: ancient truths expressed in modern times.

At the heart of theologically progressive ideals is an undermining of grace, holiness, and Scripture. For people to be transformed, they must hear and experience the truth. At its core, the truth is the greatest form of love because it can bring the greatest freedom.

COMMUNITY LIFE

Being theologically conservative is not about closing ourselves off from culture. Instead, it means we are grounded on The Word, which frames our approach to culture. Trinity embodies this by building a vibrant community through Small Groups and discipleship. It means developing relationships that are strong enough to hold each other to Scripture.

Everyone in our community is encouraged to think biblically about all their relationships, as well as their call to do God’s work in the world. In a city full of competing ideals, Trinity strives to be intellectually coherent, spiritually vibrant, and theologically sound. Our conviction and compassion belong together.
